About Rock Lake

Rock Lake Provincial Park is a provincial park located in Northern Alberta on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. It can be accessed VIA the Bighorn Highway (Highway 40) about 64km northwest of Hinton, Alberta. The centerpoint of the park – Rock Lake – is a gorgeous mountain lake that provides great access to other activities nearby.

Summer at Rock Lake

Rock Lake Provincial Park offers a good selection of low impact lake based activities such as canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Motor boating on the lake is allowed, however water skiing is not allowed on this particular lake due to the wake that it produces on the shores.

On land, there is well maintained trails that provide access to viewpoints and the backcountry crown land in the area. There are both front country and back country hiking opportunities accessible from Rock Lake. Mountain biking is a popular activity as well. There is camping opportunities both in the park and the surrounding backcountry. The park is a popular staging area for equestrians looking to head into the Willmore Wilderness Park (west) and Rock Lake-Solomon Creek Wildland Provincial Park (north and south). Geocaching is also an activity that Rock Lake offers.

Day Use at Rock Lake

There are two day use areas as Rock Lake.

The first one is a regular day use area intended for picnics normal day visits to the lake. It has a cook shelter, firepits, firewood (for sale), outhouses, and a boat launch.

The second day use area – Willmore Staging Area – is more of a staging area for equestrian users of the nearby Willmore park. It contains a loading ramp, outhouses, and a water pump.
